Canceled due to Penguins — a new one

This is a first for me, to be canceled due to a penguin incident.

I was hired to paint 20 dancers in blue, white and silver face paint for an event in lower Manhattan yesterday, as part of some sort of promotional event for Sea World.

something along these lines

a sample face design

The booking called for me to paint them at a setup site and then they’d go perform at a nearby location, which was all I knew about the event. Got a call at 9am that the event was canceling due to problems with the venue – then a call saying it might still be on. Then at around 12, Lorraine heard from the client that is was canceled for sure.

She was out and about at the time, and soon heard a report on 1010WINS explaining it, saying that an event at a restaurant was canceled due to protests over Sea World using penguins in the event. And, she told me, protestors were going to wait for the event and picket it, but decided not to because penguins don’t like flash bulbs — which made me think of King Kong, and there will be a rampaging penguin face coming in the near future.

From an article on dnainfo.com by Danielle Tcholakian on January 14, 2014 12:54pm:

“Meatpacking District hotspot Bagatelle has canceled a SeaWorld party scheduled for Tuesday night — after an announcement that the bash would include two live penguins sparked an outcry from animal rights activists. Bagatelle’s co-owner Remi Laba told DNAinfo Tuesday morning that the high-end restaurant had canceled the party Monday evening, shortly after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals announced plans to protest outside.“ – the full article includes statements from the restaurant, PETA and Sea World.

New York Knicks — Basketball Face and Body Painting Gallery

TransformationsFaceGrid_KNICKS_agostinoarts

Knicks_FaceOnWebsite_Screen shot 2013-05-01 at 11.08.59 PM-cropThe New York Knicks went to the NBA playoffs in 2013 and our Transformations artists were part of a number of special playoff events, including body painting 5 fans for the #CrazyNYK Fan Race to Times Square and painting the public for special Knicks events at Chase Bank locations around NYC. basketballKnicks_sketches1_130501I watched a game using the dvr pause button to sketch shots and dunks to explore face designs with players in action, to add to the stadium style faces we paint for sports events with big logos and team colors. I also adapted the NY skyline design I do for one real Crazy Fan who showed up in head-to-toe Knicks regalia, and he wound up as the poster child for the events on the Knicks website.

NY Knicks Crazy Fan Face Gallery:

After the first few events where we painted faces for Crazy Fan contests, we got a call asking if we could body paint 5 fan contestants for a race from Madison Square Garden to Times Square to win playoff tickets. In addition to my photos here there is a slideshow the Knicks posted with photos from the full process.

The Tiger Story at First Night Morris 2014

StoryFaces_TigerStory_byKevinCoughlin_20131231_182352

There was this nice photo of two participants in my story, “The Tiger That Went to the House of the Sun”, in a web article by Kevin Coughlin about First Night Morris 2014. I did two performances of StoryFaces at one site, and we had our Transformation facepainters at a second site.  Here’s what Kevin wrote about our part of the event:

But one new twist that proved a hit was an early 5 pm start for kids activities that included StoryFaces (a combination of storytelling and face-painting), LEGO building, and arts and crafts.

“We’re having such a great time, and really looking forward to the face-painting,” Carol Hueston of Morris Plains said on New Year’s Eve, as her 6-year-old twins Cory and Jade diligently worked on New Year’s crowns in the Morristown High School cafeteria.

“We’ll definitely be back next year,” said Long Hill resident Josephine Infante-Meehan, whose children Mossino, 9, and Francesca, 12, sported magnificent African jungle scenes painted on their faces by Christopher Agostino of StoryFaces. Francesca said she had no intention of ever washing away the artwork.

Colorful visages weren’t just for youngsters, however. Charlie Qiao, a 24-year-old student at the Stevens Institute of Technology, also had a wondrous paint job, along with his friends, Sandie Song and Sophia Liang. “This is very good,” said Charlie, a native of China, enjoying his first First Night. “It’s a wonderful experience.”

There’s also a photo of Charlie, Sandie and Sophia in the article slideshow – see the full article at:

As Kevin mentioned, having my show at 5:00 was an earlier start for the event than previous years, and I wasn’t surprised to see only  a few people at my venue in the High School as I got set to start. So I began the show in an intimate style of storytelling, with smaller tales for a small audience, and then continued to expand the performance with people entering the room in waves as shuttle buses arrived. By the end of the first show the room was SRO and I could do the Tiger Story, which is designed for larger audiences. Maybe the sense of being inundated by waves led to my starting the second show immediately after the first with the tale about the Ocean coming to visit the house of the Sun and the Moon. After the shows, I joined Lorraine and Pat who were facepainting at another part of the event. My favorite face of the evening was another version of the golden angel I’ve been painting this year. We painted as many adults as kids, including adults who were there without kids and just wanted to have the fun of being transformed on their way into the New Year.
